Details are given of the organization of a malaria surveillance programme carried out in selected districts of the reorganized Mysore State (which now includes all the areas chosen for surveillance in Bombay and some other neighbouring States), where house-spraying with DDT was suspended or reduced in frequency, and where the vectors were Anopheles fluviatilis James, A. culicifacies Giles or both . Accounts are given in these two papers of observations made in 1956-57 and 1957-58, respectively, and entomological data obtained from 1954 onwards are presented. After the interruption of spraying operations, there was an increase in the density of Anophelines in most areas. In 1957-58, 27 cases of infection were found, as compared with 13 in the previous year; 14 of them, however, occurred in one area in populations of forest labourers leading a nomadic life.
