This is the 4th report of a patient with both scleroderma and carcinoma of the esophagus. It is the 1st reported occurrence of the 2 diseases in a male subject with CRST syndrome (calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, sclerodactyly and telangiectasia syndrome). Despite the fact that the esophagus of patients with scleroderma is chronically irritated due to acid reflux (so that stricture is not uncommon), it would appear that the development of carcinoma of the esophagus in these patients probably is a rare event.
