The H-2L locus, within the D-region, codes for 2 families of specificities, H-2.1 and H-2.28; these 2 families behave as alleles. Serological evidence was obtained indicating that some H-2.28 specificities represent allotypic markers of the H-2K and H-2D molecules, as well as those of H-2L molecules, and that some H-2.1 specificities are allotypic markers of H-2K as well as of H-2L molecules. The H-2.28/H-2.1 specificities are allotypic determinants of all 3 types of H-2 molecules, suggesting that the antigenic structure of each H-2 molecule is determined by 2 genes - one for H-2.28 or H-2.1 and the other for the private and the remaining public specificities.
