Alleles of the H-5 locus linked to lx locus in different rat strains

The F1 progeny from crosses between the LEW.lx strain, homozygous for the H-5p allele, and 10 test strains were inoculated with FL tumour fragments to assess the H-5 antigenicity of the test strains. All F1 hybrids from crosses involving AVN, BP, CAP, BD VII, LEP and Choco dilute strains were killed by tumour growth, indicating that they carry the H-5l or a closely similar allele. Tumours were rejected by the majority of rats from 3 of the crosses: LEW.lx X PD (homozygous for both lx and H-5p) and the progeny of crosses involving the BD X and BD V strains, indicating that rats in these strains do not carry the H-5l allele.
