In vitro exchange of phospholipids, sterols & triterpenoids by rat kidney mitochondria

Exchange of phospholipids and sterols between the membrane of mitochondrial fraction of rat kidney and the lipids in the incubation medium was studied by using 32P-or 14C-labelled mitochondrial fraction and unlabelled sterols, triterpenoids and phospholipids and unlabelled mitochondrial fraction and 32P labelled phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidyl serine (PS) + phosphatidyl ethanolamine (PE) and 14C-cholesterol and ergosterol. Exogenous PC exchanged with membrane-bound PC and cholesterol; PE or PS with membrane-bound PE + PS and cholesterol-cholesterol with membrane bound cholesterol and PC; and ergosterol was taken up by the mitochondrial fraction and partly exchanged with membrane cholesterol but not the membrane phospholipids. This exchange took place in absence of exogenous protein or lipoprotein, and exogenous source of energy. It led to phospholipid-enrichment, cholesterol-depletion and vice versa and altered mitochondrial swelling in vitro.
