This histological study discusses the relative susceptibility of the closely related soybean cultivars-Centennial and Pickett 71 to single-egg-mass populations of Meloidogyne incognita, M. javanica and M. hapla and changes in root morphology in cultivars infected by M. incognita in relation to phytoalexin accumulation. The cultivar Centennial was resistant to M. incognita but susceptible to M. javanica and M. hapla. Cultivar Pickett 71 was susceptible to all three root-knot nematode species. Roots of Centennial inoculated with M. incognita exhibited faint brown streaks, Pickett 71 was not affected. Different cellular changes in incompatible and compatible roots were observed following inoculation.
