The effect of dose on the elimination kinetics of heparin in rats was investigated. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats received i.v. injections of different doses of heparin (150, 300 and 500 Uheparin was administered alone. There appear to be at least 2 dose-dependent aspects of heparin elimination in rats. The disposition of heparin in man is also dose dependent so that the rat may be a useful model for investigating the mechanism of the unusual pharmacokinetics of this important anticoagulant drug.
