After briefly reviewing the published literature on second trimester abortion, the authors present the results of a series of 500 abortions conducted during second trimester by insertion of a catheter only. All patients aborted by the vaginal route, and no serious complications were encountered. 24 patients complained of bleeding which was easily controlled, and 20 patients had retained placenta, which was manually removed. This procedure is safe, simple, and inexpensive, an attribute to be taken into consideration in a poor country like India.
