R plasmid(s) from S. newport was obtained and characterized. One prototype strain coding for resistance to ACKSSuT [ampicillin, chloramphenicol, kanamycin, streptomycin, sulfonamide, tetracycline] had CKSSuT forming a composite auto-transferable unit and was cured en bloc by acriflavine. The CKSSuT plasmids are fi- and they restrict the following phages: .vphi.2 in Escherichia coli K-12 F-, .lambda. vir and P1 in E. coli K-12 HfrH, all 96 ViII and 3 somatic phages in S. typhi and phages 12 and 13 in S. typhimurium converting phage type 36 to phage type 125. Restriction of such a large number of heterogenous types of phages is a rare phenomenon. The plasmid was designated pBB1.
