A high success-rate, with little delay or discomfort to patients was obtained in retrieving missing threads with a simple, safe and inexpensive device. The mi-mark helix produced no more discomfort than did insertion of an IUCD or its removal when the threads are visible. The mi-mark helix may be used as a 1st resort in the management of missing IUCD threads, provided pregnancy can be excluded. If patients are seen within 10 days of the onset of their last menstrual period there is no need for ultrasound examination to detect the IUCD or exclude pregnancy. If the thread(s) cannot be retrieved ultrasound becomes necessary to determine whether the IUCD is in the uterine cavity, and if so it should be removed by some other means.
