Lactate dehydrogenase and its isoenzymes in gastric cancer

Serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and its isoenzyme distribution were studied in patients with gastric cancer, duodenal ulcer and controls. The enzyme and isoenzymes were studied in the blood and gastric juice of the patients. The activity of LDH in the sera and gastric juice of cancer patients was significantly increased compared to duodenal ulcer patients and controls. In the sera of gastric cancer patients, the isoenzymes LDH3, LDH4 and LDH5 were significantly increased compared to duodenal ulcer patients and controls. In the gastric juice of cancer patients, all 5 isoenzymes bands were clearly seen, whereas in duodenal ulcer patients and controls, only 1 or 2 feeble bands were seen. The gastric juice of patients with duodenal ulcer and controls was concentrated 5-fold after adjoining to physiological pH and being subjected to electrophoresis. Four clear isoenzyme bands were noticed and the LDH5 bands were not visible.
