Esophagitis caused by Torulopsis glabrata. Case report

Monilial esophagitis is a disease generally affecting the host compromised by debilitating illness or chronic use of broadspectrum antibiotics or chemotherapeutic agents. It may rarely be seen in individuals with none of these predisposing factors. Various Candida species have been shown to be the causative agents, but 1 individual has been reported to have esophagitis due to T. glabrata. A patient who had clinical findings consistent with monilial esophagitis was observed in whom T. glabrata was the only organism isolated from esophagoscopy specimens. T. glabrata is a potential pathogen and can cause a clinical picture identical to that seen in candidal esophagitis.
