Occurrence of toxoplasmosis in domestic rabbits

In Czechoslovakia, 123 rabbits (Giant Chinchilla breed) supplied for laboratory purposes by different breeding stations, were tested for Toxoplasma by a modified complement fixation technique. 86 rabbits (69.9%) were positive. Confirmation was sought by infection of mice; 69 became serologically positive and 51 mice contained cysts at autopsy. The risk of infection to laboratory workers and the effect of the presence of latent toxoplasmosis in these rabbits on experimental results, are discussed.
