Lead-induced toxicosis in two domestic rabbits

Lead poisoning was diagnosed in two pet rabbits one of which had gnawed pipes covered in lead-based paint, and the other had chewed plasterboard. Clinical signs included anorexia, mild anaemia and pleural effusion. Blood lead concentrations were 40 and 70 micro g/dl, respectively. One rabbit recovered following treatment with calcium-EDTA (27.5 mg/kg, s.c., every 6 hours for 20 treatments). The other rabbit died despite calcium-EDTA treatment. PM examination showed multifocal areas of pneumonia, with scattered subserosal petechial haemorrhages.
