Lactose and casein content of nonpuerperal breast secretion

Non-puerperal mammary secretions in 27 patients were (i) brown or green in 7 patients; (ii) clear and serous in 2, and (iii) milky or white in 18. Only 2 of 10 samples of (i) were positive for both lactose and casein although an additional 3 were positive for casein alone. Both samples of (ii) and 17 of 19 samples of (iii) were positive for both casein and lactose. Data had no specific correlation with age or parity, but 12 of the 27 patients had a history of recent contraceptive use or were taking the medication when their secretions appeared.
