Membrane-associated polysaccharides of Herpetomonas samuelpessoai: influence of growth conditions

Herpetomonas samuelpessoai was cultivated in vitro on either a defined or a complex medium at 28 or 37 deg C for 48 hours. The polysaccharides were then extracted and analysed. The defined medium contained sucrose as the main carbon source. The composition of the polysaccharides differed significantly according to the medium and temperature. In particular, galactose was plentiful in the organisms grown in complex medium but not in those in the defined medium, and xylose was plentiful in organisms of the defined medium but less in the others. The authors link these differences to differences in the surface membranes, which have been shown by agglutination with Concanavalin A.
