Thiophanate was administered in the feed to 26 breeding sows at the rate of 0.045% of the ration, and to 35 growers at 0.025% or 0.0255% for 14 days. Egg output of Oesophagostomum sp., Hyostrongylus rubidus, Ascaris suum and Trichuris suis was reduced, and the hatchability of Oesophagostomum eggs passed on day 7 of medication was reduced from 85% to nil. Expulsion of Ascaris was seen on days 5-7 of medication. Slaughter of 14 treated growers showed that the drug was vermicidal. The control of intestinal forms of A. suis is contrasted with the failure of a similar total dose given on one occasion. No signs of unpalatability or toxicity were seen in these trials or in others involving more than 1500 pigs.
