The ability of adherent, macrophage-like spleen cells from BCG-infected C57BL/6 mice to suppress primary cytotoxic responses to alloantigen in vitro was studied. Suppression was dependent on a viable suppressor cell, for heating (56.degree. C 30 min) and glutaraldehyde treatment (0.1%, 2 min) ablated the suppressive action. Membrane preparations were not suppressive. Suppression was reversible and independent of the suppressor cell's Fc receptor sites.
