The value of bone photoscan in the diagnosis of skeletal involvement in multiple myeloma was assessed. The results attained in 12 patients diagnosed as having plasmacytoma, and studied by photoscanning after receiving the tracer, 99mTc-methyl-diphosphonate, are discussed. The accuracy of gammagrams for the diagnosis of solitary or multiple plasmacytoma was assessed, along with the location, distribution and number of the lesions detected. The factors influencing the accuracy of the photoscan in myeloma are discussed. The accuracy of photoscanning is higher in those lesions with osteoblastic reaction, so the usefulness of this method is limited to solitary plasmacytoma, pathological fractures of bone and control of the evolution of bone lesions in relation with the treatment.
