Intraocular penetration of sodium fluorescein administered locally. (Topical instillation, subconjunctival infection and sub-Tenon's capsular injection)

The effects of intraocular pressure (IOP) on penetration of fluorescein (F) into intraocular tissues after topical instillation, subconjunctival injection and sub-Tenon's capsule injection of 10% solution, were studied. Higher or lower IOP has had no influence on penetration of F, 5 min after the topical instillation, and the outer parts of the corena, conjunctiva and sclera were moderately fluorescent. Brilliant fluorescence in the cornea and conjunctiva, and moderate in the sclera and anterior chamber was noted 30 min after instillation, and was notable in hypotensive eyes. Instilled F is considered to penetrate the anterior chamber through the cornea, because F concentration was highest in the cornea. When F was injected subconjunctivally the dye formed blebs, and had diffused only into the neighboring tissue even after 30 min. Although the concentration of F was decreased far from the injected portion, brilliant fluorescence was seen in the cornea, conjunctiva, sclera, choroid, retina, iris, ciliary processes, of the injected region. The penetration of F was a little intense in the low IOP than in other IOP. Penetration of F after sub-Tenon's capsule injection was similar to that in subconjunctival injection in each IOP.
