Coagulase-positive and coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from patients and carriers were typed by sensitivity to 15 selected staphylococcinogenic strains. All the strains typed showed sensitivity to 1 active strain or more. Among 383 strains tested, 363 (94.4%) could be classified into 28 bacteriocin types each including 2 (0.5%)-58 (15.1%) strains. The remaining 20 strains (5.2%) showed variable and non-reproducible sensitivity patterns. Of coagulase-negative staphylococci, 93.6% belonged to types 1-12 and 6.4% to types 13-28. Of coagulase-positive staphylococci, 90.9% belonged to types 13-28 and 9.1% to types 1-12. The relation of the presence or absence of coagulase to classification into the defined bacteriocin types was clear and significant (Yule's quotient Q = 0.98, .alpha. = 0.0005). A numerical system proposed by Al-Jumaili was adopted for recording of the typing results. The method of bacteriocin typing of staphylococci and its possible application for epidemiological inquiry are discussed.
