Phage typing of the staphylococci isolated from sheep with gangrenous mastitis

70 strains of staphylococci isolated from ewes with gangrenous mastitis on 24 state farms, and 5 strains used for production of vaccine, were phage-typed using the international human set and the bovine set of the UK Central Veterinary Laboratory. 25 of the strains could be typed, 15 being found to belong to type 78, 2 each to types 1363-14/42D and 42D, and 1 each to types 883/1363-14/78, 73, 47/75, 6, 47 and 1363-14/79. Type 78, singly or with other phages, was found on 17 farms in 10 districts, and is recommended for use in vaccine production.
