Adult males of M. platythrix were given a single injection, s.c. (0.02 M/1 ml per kg body wt) of CdCl2. Qualitative and quantitative changes in pituitary gonadotrophs were analyzed at varying intervals. The follitropin [FSH] secreting cells showed heightened activity as early as 24 h, while detectable variation in lutropin [LH] secreting cells were noticed only after 7 days. Quantitatively, the FSH secreting cells reached their peak by 7 days. Hyalinization and vacuolation were noticed 56 days after treatment. The LH secreting cells increased numerically by 28 days and showed increased cytoplasmic granulation. Cd induces both hypertrophy and hyperplasia in gonadotrophs. FSH secreting cells differ from LH secreting cells with respect to their cytological manifestation and time and degree of response to CdCl2.
