Investigations on parasitic visceral granulomas in reindeer

Parasitic granulomata in the liver, kidneys and lungs of reindeer killed in August and September 1978 in Sweden were examined by the digestion technique. Liver granulomata from one animal contained an Onchocerca sp. (probably O. tarsicola, the only species found in Swedish reindeer). Similar granulomata were present in kidneys, but digestion did not reveal any worms. Elaphostrongylus rangifer larvae were identified in the lungs, as were small nematode larvae (700 X 40 mu m), probably a protostrongylid.
