In recent years, nosematosis has caused serious losses in young Alopex lagopus in Norway. In a study of the possibility of venereal transmission two vixens were inoculated in the uterus with about 20 000 N. cuniculi spores a few minutes after artificial insemination, in addition to natural mating. Neither vixen gave birth and both were serologically negative at the time of expected parturition. One was killed, the other was mated naturally in the following season and produced nine live and two dead cubs. At 6-8 weeks of age eight cubs developed clinical nosematosis, which was confirmed serologically and pathologically. It is concluded that Nosema survived in the uterus from the previous year.
