Breast feeding and infant nutrition

This article considers breast feeding as a management problem for physicians who are regularly seeing and caring for infants. It gives a brief outline of the physiology of lactation and discusses hospital and home management of breast-feeding. Dietary recommendations are made for nursing mothers, and guidelines given for drug therapy while the mother is breast-feeding. Problems of anxiety and of 'caking', mastitis, engorgement and tender or inverted nipples associated with breast-feeding are also considered. Finally weaning and the introduction of solid foods are discussed.
