In a series of 57 patients undergoing 63 transplantations there were 213 infectious episodes (25 pretransplant and 188 post-transplant). Of these, 16 had septicaemia due to fungi (13 Candida, 2 Aspergillus and 1 Trichosporon) and 10 had pneumonia due to fungi (6 A. and 3 C. and 1 blastomycosis [Blastomyces dermatitidis]). Mortality was 88% (14 patients) and 80% (8), respectively, in these 2 types of infection. Three non-fatal cases were treated with intravenous amphotericin, while 1 patient with disseminated C. infection and a normal granulocyte count survived without antifungal therapy. In a 2nd group of 16 patients undergoing transplant, 49 infectious episodes occurred (5 pretransplant and 44 post-transplant). Amongst these were 1 A. septicaemia, 1 A. pneumonia, 1 gastrointestinal C. infection and 6 oral C. infections. The patient with disseminated A. died from his infection and the one with C. died primarily from diffuse haemorrhaging.
