Toxoplasmosis in two renal transplant recipients: diagnosis by bone marrow aspiration

Acute toxoplasmosis in 2 female patients (aged 30 and 37 years) receiving cadaveric renal transplantation is reported from France. In each case the diagnosis was made by bone marrow aspiration. In the first case, primary infection was through the allograft and proved lethal; in the 2nd case there was reactivation of a latent infection. Although toxoplasmosis following immunosuppression associated with renal transplantation is rare, it is stated that in cases where the diagnosis is suspected, bone marrow examination should be mandatory since the infection is potentially curable.
