The amino-terminal sequence of streptokinase and its functional implications in plasminogen activation

The sequence of the amino-terminal 85 amino acid residues of streptokinase and the functional implications in plasminogen activation are reported. The NH2-terminal sequence of streptokinase was compared with the sequence of several known proteins. A remarkable similarity was found between the streptokinase structure and that of several serine proteases. The streptokinase sequence is homologous to trypsin and 2 serine proteases from Streptomyces griseus. Since most of the serine proteases are homologous to one another in amino-acid sequence (except subtilisins), this homology can be extended to the sequence of the plasmin light-chain.
