Sensitivity and perdictive value of various signs and symptoms in acute pancreatitis

In 54 patients with acute pancreatitis, the diagnosis was anatomically ascertained in 35 patients, and based on clinical and/or biological signs in 19 patients. The sensitivity and predictive value of various signs of severe prognosis were evaluated. Only polypnea, digestive bleeding, increase in blood urea level, signs of occlusion or peritoneal inflammation were considered as significant. Prognosis was constantly fatal when hyperazotemia was associated to any other symptom mentioned above. The association of 2 of these symptoms in patients above 40 yr was constantly fatal. Awareness of populations with different risks must be considered in any controlled study on the efficiency of a new medical or surgical therapy of acute pancreatitis.
