Effect of a new non-ionic contrast medium on left ventricular volume measurements in the dog

Continuous analysis of ventricular volumes was performed in 9 mongrel dogs, with injection of a new non-ionic low-osmolarity contrast medium, Iopamidol. Two other commonly used contrast media (Urografin-Vascoray) were compared. During the first 7 beats from the onset of the injection instaneous volume, end-diastolic volume, end-systolic volume, stroke volume and ejection fraction were assessed. Iopamidol showed lesser changes in all these parameters compared to those obtained with Urografin and Vascoray. The low osmolarity of Iopamidol evidently explains the different changes observed.
