Studies of posttranslation modification of NHCP , a virus associated with human cervical carcinoma. Krause and Stein have showed increased histone acetylation in SV40-transformed compared with normal WI-38 cells. Increased histone acetylation was observed in embryonic kidney cells infected with adenovirus. Histones are known to be contained within some DNA tumor viruses, and there is evidence that these viral-associated histones are more highly acetylated than host cell histones. That acetylation of histones may be a significant factor in viral transformation is proposed by the work of Schaffhausen and Benjamin, who correlated deficiency of histone acetylation with loss of transforming ability of polyoma virus. The significance of these observations is not known at this time.
