Of 250 patients in the UK from 64 to 95 years old, of whom 80% were 75 years and over, 54 had serum vitamin B-12 less than 300 ng/litre and 46 had serum folacin less than 1.9 ng/ml. Study of the mean corpuscular volume as an index of possible deficiency states did not show positive relations. Folacin deficiency was common in men and women over 85 years, particularly in those living alone.
