For some time Laelaps has been recognized as the key genus among a large group of related parasitic mites, which have often been placed together under the family Laelaptidae. Despite the important taxonomic position as well as the increasing interest in the possible medical significance of this genus there exists a great deal of confusion in regard to its constitution. The collections of the Natural History Museum of Stanford University have afforded a good representation of this genus as it occurs in North America. Comparative observations of the species reveal close morphological similarity among them and a review of their hosts lends a further unification to the genus in that all species clearly assignable to it are typically parasitic upon rodents of the family Muridae. The figures in this paper have all been drawn from specimens in this collection, and the types of two species here described as new are also in this museum.
