Pyrogenicity, toxicity, mitogenicity, immunopotential effect and the ability of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) to produce immunological tolerance are discussed in this review. Results are discussed from studies of LPS syndrome in humans with Yersinia enterocolitica and in mice with Salmonella typhimurium. Mechanisms of penetration and its various stages are discussed, citing data from tests using 14C-labeled LPS from S. minnesota. The effect of LPS on oxidative phosphorylation, leukocyte function and DNA synthesis are described using data from studies on mice and rabbits with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Brucella abortus suis. Chemical production of LPS, the correlation between individual properties of LPS and their chemical components and the artificial detection of individual useful properties are discussed.
