Mechanism of action of nourseothricin and bacterial resistance and cross-resistance to this antibiotic

Nourseothricin (NTC) is an inhibitor of protein synthesis in intact bacterial cells and in cell free systems of Escherichia coli. Its mechanism of action is comparable to that of aminoglycoside antibiotics. Both groups of antibiotics are capable of inhibiting specific sub-steps of protein synthesis and are likely to induce miscoding of RNA at the ribosome. No cross resistance to NTC was recorded from Escherichia coli strains with plasmid-encoded resistance to aminoglycoside antibiotics. However, cross resistance to aminoglycoside antibiotics was exhibited by a NTC-resistant strain with chromosomal resistance, following mutagenesis.
