Summary of safety evaluations for febantel paste and suspension in horses

Studies were carried out using the unformulated drug substance, a 9.3% suspension and a 45.5% paste. Groups of horses were studied using the following regimens: the unformulated substance in non-starved adults; the suspension as a single treatment; the paste as a single treatment; multiple treatments of either 24 or 48 mg/kg paste or suspension for 10 consecutive days; a study of sucking foals given single doses; pregnant mares given doses of 30 mg/kg at 2-week intervals on 12 occasions; and mares given 12 mg/kg in the feed for 188 days, 40 days before and 148 days after conception. The recommended dose for all horses is 6 mg/kg. No horses in any experiment, nor foals born to experimental mares showed any ill effects. No lesions were found in slaughtered horses.
