Emigration of Europeans and Africans to North America is cited as the major factor causing serious health care problems. Genetics and symptomatology of the major hemoglobinopathies including sickle cell anemia, the thalassemias and hydrops fetalis are reviewed. An epidemiological study of the Canadian population affected by hemoglobinopathies and a proposed program of screening, detection and therapy is presented.
