Etiology of human gastric cancer caused by ingestion of nitrosamines, based on extrapolation of animal studies is questioned. Studies investigating dietary habits and epidemiological incidence are cited as less than convincing hypothetical evidence. A carcinogenic mechanism of gastric mucosal interaction with nitrosamines is suggested.
