Does (10 per group) aged 21/2 yr were treated as follows: (1) 2 injections, 8 days apart, of 50 mg progesterone plus 600 IU PMS 5 days later, and a daily ration of 1 kg concentrates plus grazing; (2) a daily ration of 400 g germinated barley, 200 g crushed sunflower seed, 200 g wheat bran and 200 g concentrates, plus grazing ad lib.; (3) as for group 2, but the barley had not germinated; (4) 1 kg concentrates plus grazing. For the 4 groups resp., the percentage of females conceiving to 1st mating was 90.9, 86.4, 95.7 and 86.4, the percentage not conceiving after repeated matings 0, 0, 0 and 16.7, the number aborting 1, 1, 1 and 0, and kidding rate 223, 168, 183 and 157%. In the 1st group, 22.7, 40.9, 31.8 and 4.6% of females gave birth to single kids, twins, triplets, quadruplets/quintuplets resp. One set of triplets was recorded in the 4th group; otherwise, only single and twin births were obtained in groups 2-4. The mating period was shortest for the 1st group, followed by the 3rd, 4th and 2nd groups.
