Hypothetical elements, hemoglobins and proteins in the blood of the Caiman crocodilus (Linneaus)

A complete hematological study was made of blood samples taken from 69 spectacled caimans (Caiman crocodilus) within the 1st few hours after capture. Total protein content and electrophoresis was studied in a group of them. The levels of Hb, hematocrit, red cell counts and MCHC were very high compared to the values in humans. The white cell counts were higher but the thrombocyte count was similar to humans. Blood smears showed a high index of young red cells, eosinophilia and high level of intra and extra cellular parasites. The total concentration of protein and albumin was low, accompanied with high level of .beta. globulins. In 2 cases a double band of albumin was observed. The physiological significance of these results was discussed.
