Immunologic aspects of small cell carcinoma

Several clinical diagnostic tests and lung cancer immunobiology are reviewed in patients with emphasis on carcinoembryonic antigen and human lung tumor associated antigen radioimmunoassays. Use of leukocyte migration inhibitor (LMI) is introduced as an in vitro assay for detection of lung and other cancers, but especially small cell carcinoma. Positive LMI assays are found in 88% of patients with small cell carcinoma. Myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis, allergic encephalomyelitis and other neuropathies may be similar to small cell carcinoma on the basis of an autoimmune mechanism.
