Some histological and histochemical studies in rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) during sub-chronic administration of dieldrin (HEOD)

Hepatotoxicity, induced by subchronic oral administration of the insecticide dieldrin (2.5 mg/kg body wt) on alternate days, caused increase in size and weight of liver. Liver from many dieldrin administered animals showed nutmeg appearance. Histological and histochemical changes, e.g., dilatation and congestion of sinusoids, acidophilic degeneration, mononuclear infiltration, fatty inclusions, margination of cytoplasm, fatty degeneration, necrosis, depletion of glycogen, accumulation of lipids and cholesterol, marked increase in alkaline and acid phosphatase activity, were observed.
