Methods for the separate, consecutive and simultaneous demonstration of cholinesterase reaction and glyoxylic acid-induced fluorescence of catecholamines in the stretch preparations and in cryotome and paraffin sections are described. The advantages and limitations of using the glyoxylic acid-induced fluorescence method in such combined reaction procedures are discussed. The methods described seem to provide tools for more valid, accurate and detailed studies on the relationship between cholinesterase-positive and adrenergic structures of rat peripheral nerves at the light microscopical level.
