Blatt [1976] questioned the possibility of a phase transition being associated with excitable membrane phenomena. His arguments are based on the correlation between observed capacitance and potential changes during excitation. This communication does not take issue with Blatt's view; in fact his point is well-taken. It is thought that the position of proponents of the phase transition hypothesis deserves to be clarified, especially with regard to the integral relation between phase transitions and cooperative phenomena.
