Effect of chlorpromazine on hypertension by desinhibition in dogs: comparison of intravenous and intracisternal administration

The tensional effect of i.v. and intracisternal chlorpromazine were studied in neurogenic hypertensive dogs by deinhibition and bilateral vagotomy. Chlorpromazine (2 and 5 mg/kg) i.v. instantaneously corrected the rise in blood pressure after deinhibition, but was inactive on tachycardia. This effect was transient. Intracisternal (0.5-2 mg/kg) chlorpromazine was always inactive in the deinhibited dog. These results exclude an intervention from baro- or chemoreceptors and central sympathetic structures (.alpha.-adrenergic or dopaminergic receptors). They suggest that central dopaminergic pathways are not involved in the blood pressure regulation.
