Male Wistar rats were given a diet with Na 2 mEq/kg and 2% NaCl solution or deionized water to drink. Renin in plasma of the 2 groups was 7.3 and 46.0 ng/ml h, respectively, and in kidney was 15.84 and 45.12 mu g/g. Basal rate of renin release from isolated perfused kidneys was 0.25 and 2.41 mu g/h g which represented 1.6 and 5.6% h of the amount of renin stored. When the perfusion pressure was decreased from 150 to 50 mmHg or when isoproterenol 2.43 mu mol/litre was perfused, renin release and fraction released in kidneys from rats deprived of Na increased but not in those from rats given NaCl despite a substantial amount of renin stored.
