A series of substituted .alpha.-amino acid amides of phenethylamines were prepared and tested as inhibitors of the accumulation of noradrenaline -2-aminopropionamide hydrochloride and the levorotatory enantiomer were highly selective inhibitors of 5-HT accumulation in mouse and rat brain slices, and strongly potentiated the behavioral syndrome of 5-hydroxytryptophan in mice. They had a low acute toxicity and very weak mydriatic effects.
