Effects of PGA1 on renin secretion. Experimental research

Anesthetized dogs had both femoral veins incannulated, one for drug injections, the other for periodic blood samples. Prostaglandin[PG]A1 (2 .mu.g/kg per min) was infused for 1 h. In other dogs renal arterial pressure and renal venous flow were determined for a 1-h control period and again after infusion of PGA1. Plasma renin activity (PRA) was determined by radioimmunoassay. Dogs receiving PGA1 infusion showed a substantial increase in PRA; increased production of angiotensin occurred 10 min after beginning of the infusion, then diminished. There was no significant variation in renal arterial pressure and renal venous flow in response to PGA1 infusion; therefore renal blood flow changes cannot be correlated with the observed increase in PRA.
