The effect of renal artery pressure (RAP) changes on the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and plasma renin activity (PRA) was examined in anesthetized dogs. The renal arterial-venous extraction technique for determining GFRA-V was used in this study instead of standard clearance methods calculated from urine because of the large reduction in urine flow which occurred when RAP was reduced. There was a good correlation between the changing rate of RBF and GFRA-V, but not GFRU calculated from urine. PRA was determined by radioimmunoassay in arterial and renal vein blood. There were no changes in arterial PRA when RAP was reduced from 128 .+-. 7 to 80 mm Hg. Renal vein PRA increased significantly when RAP was reduced from 128 .+-. 7 to 100 and 80 mm Hg. Renin secretion rate (RSR) also increased exponentially by reducing RAP.
